Details on the 2018 & 2019 Club Ski Trips

Background

The 2018 & 2019 club ski trips are now posted on the VASC website. The first opportunity for booking a spot on one or all these trips will be at the club social on Thursday October 4 beginning at 7:30pm at the Six Mile Pub.

The Board began planning the 2018 & 2019 trips last April and used the results of our member survey to help guide the plans. The results in the survey were very clear that the membership continued to want to go to Whistler as a ski destination for 3-4 or 5-day trips.  The membership was also clear that they still wanted to go to Whistler even in the face of expected 10% or more increases in costs due to the increasing popularity of the resort.

The membership also strongly indicated their desire to go the interior ski resorts- particularly ones that were 4-5 hours away from the Tsawwassen/Horseshoe Bay ferry terminals.

There also didn’t seem to be a priority in hiring a bus to transport skiers to the resorts versus taking their own vehicles or carpooling with others.

The Trips- Some Detail

To help guide your trip planning and booking, here is some detail on the trips laid out for this coming season.

·     December 7-11, 2018- Whistler trip #1- Aspens Condos

Trip Coordinator: Verena Sexsmith

This is one of our more popular trips for the season and is a fantastic way to kick off the ski season. Many people can ski free on this trip as one of the perks of using their Whistler Blackcomb (WB) 5 or 10-day Edge cards.

For this year, it is now a 4-daytrip to maximize your skiing (especially if you are using your ski free perk!) and fun in the resort.

The Aspens Condo complex is right near the base of Blackcomb Mountain and the Upper Village. It is a ski in ski out facility. All our rooms are 2-bedroom suites and include full kitchens and 2 bathrooms. This facility also offers a very large exterior hot tub/pool complex and ski valet service.

The Blackcomb base offers lots of shops and services and several restaurants and bars. One of the better ones is “Merlin’s” in the Blackcomb services lodge. Hopefully, the “Hair Farmers” band will be back this year playing in the bar. They were great when we were there last year. There are also free transit buses from Aspens and the Blackcomb base to Whistler village (2-3 minutes away)- so we will be very central to all the activities in the resort.

The big news for 2018 at WB is a new 10-person gondola at the base of Blackcomb. This new lift will allow skiers/boarders to go right from the Blackcomb base to the Rendezvous Restaurant and Peak to Peak Gondola (access lift across to Whistler) near the peak of Blackcomb Mountain.  This new gondola is a short ski (or walk) from our accommodations at the Aspens. Pretty sweet to be able to get right to the alpine of the mountains on one warm and dry ski lift!

WB has one of the best snow-making systems in the world and as a result can offer guaranteed skiing even though it is early season. In the past few years, we have had great skiing all over the resort- even though it is early December.

January 25-28, 2019- Whistler #2- Aspens Condos

Trip Coordinator: Paddy Bradley

This is a 3-day trip. The late January timing of this trip will offer participants some of the best winter skiing of the season. Typically, all the resorts’ high alpine and lower ski runs are in full operation and in great shape.

For the past number of years our January Whistler trip has been at Legends Hotel in the Creekside area of Whistler. As a result of significant price increases during the January period throughout the resort and particularly at Legends, we moved the trip to the Aspens Condo complex at the base of Blackcomb.

In our search throughout the resort, The Aspens provided us with the best value for our club on this booking. Aspens gets consistently high marks in Trip Advisor rankings and a 4.4 rating in Google reviews.

As noted above for trip #1, the Aspens Condos complex offer luxurious and convenient facilities in a truly ski in ski out location that is right in the heart of the action for both the Upper Village and main Whistler Village.

Along with the new 10-person gondola and shops, services and restaurants/bars almost at your doorstep- it is a very good package for skiing and enjoyment in the resort!

February 2-7, 2019- Silver Star Mountain Resort- The Pinnacles

Trip Coordinator: Dee Rice

Silver Star has been a club favourite ski destination for our members for several years. For 2019, we are going back to The Pinnacles for our accommodations. The suites booked for this year are the same end suite ( everybody on the trip gave it good reviews last year) as last year (everybody on the trip gave them good reviews) and one 2 doors down the hall that is functional. This facility also features full kitchens, hot tubs, free parking ( 6 parking spots assigned to the group- so carpooling is essential) , right near the ski village and is also ski in ski out. The facility gets 4.5 stars on Trip Advisor.

This is a 5-day trip.

At Silver Star this year, the big news is a new 8-person gondola that will allow access from the village to summit of the mountain and replaces the old double Summit Chair. With this new lift, there will be quick and easy access to the Paradise Camp ( great spot for hot soup and coffees etc. to warm-up) and the backside area of Silver Star, which offers some of the finest skiing in this resort.

February 7-11, 2019 – Revelstoke Mountain Resort- The Cube Boutique Hotel

Trip Coordinator: Dee Rice

This is a separate trip to the Silver Star trip noted above, some people may want to carry on from Silver Star for this trip or just head up directly from Victoria/Vancouver. Others may also want to use the Revelstoke trip as a stepping stone to other trips deeper into the Kootenays.

Our booked accommodation is at The Cube Boutique Hotel which is right in the heart of downtown Revelstoke. The mountain is about a 10-minute drive away, but there is a free shuttle that stops right in front of the hotel that will take you right to the base of the mountain.

The Cube is an inexpensive funky facility that is only 4-5 years old. It gets a 4.5 rating on Trip Advisor and offers separate bedrooms with a sink and toilet in each room. There are showers on each floor down the hall from the rooms. Downstairs there is a communal social gathering spot and large kitchen/dining area. Parking is free. The hotel will also provide a complimentary continental breakfast each morning and free passes to the local recreation centre which is only a few minutes away to walk or drive. This rec centre has great hot tubs, swimming pool and fitness facilities.

Revelstoke Mountain has the highest vertical of any ski area in North America and is renowned for its snowy environment. It is a big mountain with lots of very challenging and extremely long runs, but also offers a great deal of terrain for intermediate skiers.

The City of Revelstoke is filled with lots of shops, services and restaurants/bars. It is a really authentic and fun ski town!

March 10-15, 2019- Whistler #3 - 2 locations:

1.    Inside Edge Ski Club cabin- Ardene Rytz is the Trip Coordinator

2.    Tantalus Hotel- Barb Snyder is the Trip Coordinator

This is a 5-day trip at both locations.

The Inside Edge Ski Club cabinis based near Nestor’s Village ( about a 5-minute drive to the village and lifts). The cabin is owned by the Inside Edge Ski Club and anybody who is booking this accommodation on our trip must also be a member of the IE Club. For those signing up for this trip, we will process your IE membership on your behalf. The IE membership fee is included in the trip cost.

Due to significant increases in mid-week use at the cabin, the IE Club has reduced our allotment of beds to 16 versus the 20 and exclusive use of the cabin that we have had in previous years.

The cabin features bunk bed and dorm style sleeping arrangements but also features 2 large kitchens, a barbecue, a large living and dining room, cozy fireplace, 3 bathrooms with showers and washer and dryer machines. Folks booked on this trip need to bring their own bedding.

Parking is free, but there is a limit of 7 vehicles in the lodge parking lot. Carpooling is strongly recommended. As this cabin is run by volunteers, everybody who books here is responsible for a chore to help keep the place clean and well-functioning. There is a sign-up list in the cabin.

Tantalus Hotelis very close to the main Whistler village. It is a 5-minute walk to the village. The hotel also offers a free shuttle that leaves regularly from the lobby and takes you very close to the village centre. One of the nice features of this hotel is that it is quite quiet being just off the main village (which can be very noisy at night).

The hotel offers 2-bedroom suites each with full kitchens, 2 bathrooms and a living room. The hotel also offers outside hot tubs and ski locker near the lobby. Parking is an extra cost. At this location- you don’t have to do chores or sleep in a bunk!!

March 29-31, 2019- Bear Lodge at Mount Washington Alpine Resort

Trip Coordinator: Ardene Rytz

We are back to Mount Washington after a hiatus of one season. This is a 2-day trip.

Our stay at Mount Washington will be at the Bear Lodge. This hotel is right on the ski hill and is truly ski in ski out. At the “Bear”, everybody will get a bed- with no bunks or sofas needed for people to stay on. Thanks, Ardene for that consideration!

Each room will have a full kitchen and 2 bathrooms. The Lodge has a communal hot tub and one underground parking stall and one outside parking spot per suite. People are encouraged to carpool. Additional parking, if required, can be purchased for $10/day.

The Lodge is within a 2 to 3-minute walk to the ski lifts and day lodge for the bar, restaurant, bistro, ski shop, general store (including liquor) and ski rentals.

April 12-15, 2019-Whistler #4-  Legends Hotel at Creekside area of Whistler

Trip Coordinator: Dave Chater

For the last club trip of the season, we will be staying at the Legends Hotel in he Creekside area of Whistler. This location has always been a favourite of the ski club. It offers lift access via gondola right outside the hotel to Whistler and Dusty’s (one of the best  bars and outside patios in Whistler) is one minute from the hotel. There is also grocery store, ski shops, other pubs/restaurants and a BC liquor store nearby. Legends is also one of the best hotels in the resort with an absolutely amazing exterior hot tub and pool complex. Unlike in January, we were able to get a very good price on rooms- so this is a very sweet deal for a 3-day trip.

The rooms at Legends are 2 and 3-bedroom suites each with full kitchens, 2 bathrooms and a living room.

We have booked a large banquet room in the hotel so that we can have a group potluck dinner and social gathering on Saturday night. This will help make this a great-year end trip.

Typically, we have had some of the best skiing of the year on this trip- now one of our most popular. Fresh powder and sunshine are very common!

The World Ski and Snowboard Festival is on at the resort from April 10-15- so there should be lots of special events and concerts with a great vibe in the resort during our trip.
